I am an artist, yes, and I’ll claim it not for the degrees that have officially given me status, but rather for the 8 year-old girl in sequins and a boa who fearlessly sang in front of 500 kids and parents at her talent show in 1988. I am an artist because she is still in me, smiling with every false note and every wrong slip of the tap shoe, with every awkward wave of those skinny arms, and bob of the long-necked head. For the most part, these days, I move other bodies, I refashion space, I provide feedback, and I obsess about finding some stillness in my hyperproductive world. But on a great day, I can still belt out “The Glory of Love” from Beaches, with a slight lilt in my voice and a hip thrust you’d never forget.
